Joel found his way to architecture via a relatively indirect path. A native Austinite, he completed his Bachelor of Fine Arts at UT with a focus on painting. Following various escapades within the Austin Art World (co-managing award-winning gallery, Camp Fig; assisting with installations at Arthouse; engaging the public with unsolicited, temporary screenprint displays), Joel left the comfort of home for the mystic unknowns of Taos, New Mexico. His vision quest in Taos pushed him towards Chicago where his art pursuits had begun to "play second fiddle” to his carpentry career building high-end custom cabinetry and millwork for the distinguished Lakeshore Drive folk. Acceptance letters to graduate architecture programs began to arrive with the onset of the recession and he left Illinois for Arizona. Joel completed his Masters in Architecture in 2012 and has been with Tim Cuppett Architects since January of 2015.
When he is not in the office, Joel and his wife, Lori (and their dog, Tex) daydream about their next travel adventure and work on their home and garden. He continues to make things with his hands and has visions of grandeur of turbocharging his 1980 Chevy LUV.
